Overview

Heart of Darkness: With 15 Illustrations and a Free Online Audio File

by Joseph Conrad

Heart of Darkness is the best known novel written by Joseph Conrad. Set in the late 1800s in the Congo, it examines the relationship of two men, Kurtz, a European who has "Gone Troppo" (Going Crazy) while working in the ivory business and Marlow, a steamboat captain who goes looking for him. Along the way, we read of the casual violence by Europeans toward Africans.

Conrad uses the structure of a story within a story to depict the effects of imperialism. Marlow's rambling allows a realistic first person account of the era. Conrad's technique of layering alludes to the confusion of colonialism for all sides involved.

In 1998, the Modern Library ranked Heart of Darkness as the sixty-seventh of the hundred best novels in English of the twentieth century.

"The belief in a supernatural source of evil is not necessary; men alone are quite capable of every wickedness."
