Description: This user-friendly book on assessment addresses some pathophysiology of the disease processes and illustrates normal and abnormal assessment findings. It is divided by body systems, making it easier to locate needed sections. The illustrations target visual learners, and make the book more attractive and easy to navigate.
Purpose: The purpose is to highlight the main physical assessment techniques, and demonstrate the sequence of physical and health assessment. The book provides visual references for the assessment skills, while noting that it is no substitute for individual patient assessment.
Audience: The target audience is nursing students, working nurses, and nurses returning to practice. The book is simple enough for the learning audience as well as informative enough for experienced professionals. As a summary/visual guide for students and nurses, it is easy to read and use as a reference to refresh skills and guide the assessment sequence.
Features: The book covers physical assessment based on body systems. In addition, it reviews fundamentals and pregnancy. Each section includes anatomy, assessment skills, abnormal findings, and Q & A sections. The illustrations make it more attractive, and the colorful pictures support the content. The book does not address mental health and might benefit from a psychosocial assessment section.
Assessment: My background is in community health nursing and for the past six years I have been teaching undergraduate nursing students fundamental of nursing, pediatric nursing, professional trends in nursing, medical-surgical nursing, psychiatric nursing, and individual health assessment. I find this book very useful and a great reference for my courses. It is helpful as a reference for both nurses and students.
