Description: This is a quick reference for assessment techniques, laboratory interpretation, and treatment algorithms, as well as special topics/features such as older adults, bioterrorism, and a Spanish dictionary. The first edition was published in 2011, making this update necessary to account for current clinical practice guidelines and information.
Purpose: The purpose is to provide a quick reference guide for use in the middle of an emergent situation. It is waterproof, so it apparently is intended to serve "on the run." The title indicates the purpose, and the book meets a need for nurses working in fast-paced emergency departments.
Audience: It is written at a suitable level for practicing registered nurses, but it is a helpful guide for nurse practitioners, residents, and new emergency department physicians. The book is appropriate for all these potential audiences. The clinical author is a credible authority with credentials and publications to support her expertise, as are the contributors.
Features: The book covers everything thinkable needed in a quick resource for nurses working in the ED. I was particularly impressed with the section dealing with troubleshooting ventilator alarms — quite handy! The material is well organized, easy to find, and is supported by colorful pictures, algorithms, and bullets for rapid recognition and treatment. The only quibble I have is with the title. I would prefer either "ED" or "Emergency" to "ER" in the title. The use of "ER" limits the scope of the book; "Emergency" covers situations no matter where they occur, although ED is more concise for use in the title.
Assessment: This is a wonderful little pocket companion, and it is useful beyond for those it is intended. Although there are other titles, such as Fast Facts for the ER Nurse: Emergency Room Orientation in a Nutshell, 3rd edition, Buettner (Springer Publishing Company, 2017), and the previous edition of this book (ICU/ER Facts Made Incredibly Quick (Lippincott Williams & Wilkins, 2011)), they are slightly different from this title. The first one is specifically for orientation for new nurses, and the second includes ICU facts, which is excessive for a quick, handy reference for the ED.
