This book is a unique treatment of the subject of upper extremity traumatic injuries. The authors have adopted an unusual method of demonstrating the thought process for the treatment of a particular injury in algorithm form. It is the goal of the authors that by guiding readers through the various considerations regarding upper extremity trauma, they will become more comfortable with and will integrate numerous issues simultaneously in taking care of the traumatic wound. Those issues include the quality of soft tissues, the degree of bone and ligamentous injury, nerve damage, and vascular injury. Preoperative patient evaluation as well as postoperative rehabilitation protocols are included. The book is directed towards two types of surgeons. As a teaching tool, the book will be useful to the young extremity surgeon who has not yet internalized all of the various issues regarding trauma. The authors also note that much extremity surgery is done in hospitals that are not specialized centers, and so this book may be a useful reference to the occasional hand and upper extremity surgeon. The book is laid out with 109 algorithms, clearly illustrated figures, and concise text. The "contents" page allows easy location of the various sections of the book: classifications useful in injury description, principles of treatment, handling of specific tissue types (hone, nerve, etc.), the treatment algorithms, and a flap atlas. With this book the authors do not teach surgical management, but rather how to break up the complex issues and various components of an acutely injured upper extremity. Therefore, the book cannot "stand alone." Many of these algorithms deal with complex surgical issues,and would generally be treated by attending surgeons with large amounts of experience -- the same physicians who would not need this book. Therefore, the book will be most useful as a teaching tool to junior assistant surgeons.
