Description: This is the third edition of the psychiatry entry in the Current Diagnosis and Treatment series. It updates the previous edition published in 2008.
Purpose: The purpose of the book is to be "the definitive clinical overview of psychiatric care...in time-saving Lange Current outline style." These are worthy objectives given the ever-growing field of psychiatry, and the authors succeed in meeting their expressed purposes.
Audience: The authors identify this book as "essential for medical students, residents, clinicians, physician assistants, nurse practitioners, and other health care providers who encounter and provide care for individuals with psychiatric symptoms and behavior disturbances." Because it is so broad and is written at basic level, any of the identified target audiences would certainly benefit from using this book to get direction on a specific psychiatric topic. I found it interesting that the authors did not identify psychiatrists in their target audience, but perhaps it is because of the more generalized nature of the information. The authors recruited a vast group of contributors who are experts in their respective subjects to ensure credibility.
Features: The 58 chapters are grouped into five sections on psychiatric principles and practice, psychiatric disorders in adults, psychiatric disorders in children and adolescents, alcohol and substance-related disorders, and psychiatry in special settings. Each section reviews the major topics in each area and includes various graphics to help readers comprehend the material. An index concludes the book.
Assessment: Like all fields of medicine, psychiatry is inundated with books and software reviewing basic psychiatric topics. This includes Kaplan and Sadock's Synopsis of Psychiatry: Behavioral Sciences/Clinical Psychiatry, 11th edition, Sadock et al. (Wolters Kluwer, 2015), Massachusetts General Hospital Handbook of General Hospital Psychiatry, 7th edition, Stern et al. (Elsevier, 2018), and UpToDate, among others. Each has its particular strengths and weaknesses and likely finds its readers based on specific preferences. While I found this book to be a welcome resource with its own strengths of the broadness of the coverage, ability to read specific sections independently for specific inquiries, and presentation of the material in a basic format, there are areas that could be improved, including having more graphics, illustrations, and case examples and providing a greater technical depth of information including references for further reading. These are personal preferences and are not intended to minimize the value of this book, but rather to illustrate that readers should examine and compare it to other references to find the proper fit for their particular style of learning.
