Overview

The purpose of this book is to provide the reader with a perspective on apraxia that considers a link between the pathology of apraxia and normal motor skill. In addition, it is the intention of the authors to provide information that is theoretically interesting as well as clinically applicable. The book is a collection of papers by various authors working in the area of apraxia, almost exclusively with limb aparaxia specifically. Beginning with Hugo Liepman's work of the late 19th century, a cognitive neuropsychological model of limb apraxia is reviewed, the use of new technologies that are informative about the mechanisms of limb praxis are discussed, and issues related to research as well as clinical assessment/management of the disorder are provided. While acquired limb apraxia is the focus of the book, there are also chapters on handedness, developmental apraxia of speech, and disorders of handwriting.

This edited book addresses both developmental and acquired forms of apraxia. The 14 chapters not only cover information about theoretical aspects of apraxia, but also provide insights into the management and treatment of apraxia. In general, previous reviews on this topic have been directed at individuals with expertise in the area, in part because the concepts behind apraxia can be difficult to understand. However, this book is written in a manner that is easy to follow and understand, and thus the book is appropriate for readers with many different levels of scientific and clinical knowledge. In particular, individuals who most frequently encounter patients with apraxia such as neurologists, physiatrists, neuropsychologists, speech pathologists, and physical therapists would best be served by this book. The authors thus achieve their primary objectives, which are to spark an interest in and to provide a review of the various aspects of apraxia to a variety of clinicians and researchers. The contributors have published extensively in the area of apraxia. In particular, Dr. Heilman, who was trained by one of the founding fathers of behavioral neurology, Dr. Geschwind, has especially contributed to and shaped current research on apraxia. An especially helpful feature of the book, provided for the novice in the field of apraxia, is the glossary of key word definitions. The illustrations, tables, and references are not excessive. This book is useful for students and established researchers interested in the theories behind apraxia. Likewise, from a practical standpoint, clinicians (including occupational and physical therapists) can use the book to better recognize andpossibly treat apraxia.
