Overview

Hard-working doctor, Brooks Carter, took a rare day off and relaxed at a party given by an ex-patient. There he met Janet Charlane, who was strikingly beautiful and flatteringly interested in him. For a few days she accompanied him on his calls, and Brooks' patients got to know her.
Then she disappeared, leaving no trace except for an orchid pin she had frequently worn.

Was there foul play? Who was the unidentified man wearing dark glasses and a salt-and-pepper suit, the last person seen with Janet? Did the accidental death of Vivian O'Dane have any connection with Janet's disappearance? Was the hit-and-run accident that killed Vivian really a murder?

These were some of the questions investigated by the police--and Carter--as they set about looking for the missing woman, or for her corpse.
